Free Networking Online to Promote Your (Home) Business

Social networking, business networking, it is all about marketing yourself on the internet. Estate agents have always said its about location, location, location. Even in a housing slump, it's still about location! And now the triple word online must be: networking, networking, networking!

Why? Because everyone who has a business will want and need customers (or distributors), or to attract some other external interest to their business in some way. Most businesses now have both a physical as well as online presence (and many may have just the online presence; indeed internet businesses are on the increase, because they a) can reach a global market more easily, and b) usually have very low overheads to run). Anyway, let's face it: people just expect you to have your own website now. End of story.

So, how to expose your website and gain most coverage. If you have a high street presence, this will usually speak for itself. People see your store and know where you are. However you would advertise your website address in your window, or leaflets and newspapers locally, so that customers could go online to visit "the store" at a time more convenient to them eg. after shop closing hours. If they know you already, they will probably know your web address and/ or be able to easily locate it from a quick search online.

For most others (especially dedicated internet-only businesses) the most likely way will be via the internet of course. People will search, not for your business (because chances are they won't know as yet that it exists) but for the product, service or type of company they seek. They will use keywords, and if your advert contains the relevant keywords, you may be lucky enough to attract that visitor! You might use Ads words, banner ads, splash pages, squeeze pages etc. Don't worry if some of the terminology here is unfamiliar, we can run through that later - in another article perhaps - the purpose of mentioning them here is just to let you know that there are various methods to choose but invariably they will all cost you! And you cannot guarantee the results with advertising; some people will see your advert and some won't. Those that see it may not be interested in what you are advertising, and those that may be interested may just not be looking at the right time, in the right spot , on the right day. Or they may simply choose a different keyword which throws up the results for several other businesses online, but not yours. Ho hum.

Networking. Now that's the way to do it. Networking, networking, networking! You are online, they are online, you just have to meet up. So join a social or business network. There are a few out there. Think about the big ones: Facebook, MySpace, Bebo. But don't limit yourself to those. Sometimes a huge network can be a victim of its own success. Millions of people online - and it can be a needle in a haystack job to get them to view your profile and find out what it is that you can offer. Many of these are really just social networking sites too - they don't want to know that you have a great Multi-Level marketing business idea or a downline which needs expanding. They are not interested in becoming a distributor, or buying your fantastic goods, services, products or even making money online. The people who are attracted to social networking sites are, by and large, looking to network socially. (The clue is in the name). They want to meet others like them for a drink or party, or to chat about football, golf and cars, or handbags, shoes and chocolate.

Business networking. Now that's slightly different. True, some people on the bigger social networking sites also use this as a platform to mention their business (well, they have had no real alternative platforms to use, and they can see the value of networking). Maybe they do so in the belief that if they tell a thousand people online about their new product, 999 might not be interested but then they only need one new customer to make it worth their while.... and it is so much easier to tell thousands of people online than in the good old days of trudging the streets and knocking on a thousand doors to sell their wares.

The real solution to the networking online bit for business? Find an online business network site! They are starting to spring up all over. Newer, smaller ones may have an advantage over bigger, more established ones in that you have fresh territory in which to establish yourself (and become a prominent figure online) before the rush. Once the network grows, (as most networks invariably do - Again think Facebook....) then you have a much bigger audience who may be naturally attracted to your profile as you seem to have been there for a while and know your way around! Try a few different networks, post your profile on different sites and see which is best. The trick is to get on a site which is specifically designed for business linking and which will allow you to advertise what you do. Even better if you get onto a network which has been geared towards your "type" of business from the outset. Then you will definitely be networking with like-minded individuals. For example, you sell golf clubs? Get onto a site which appeals to sports people in business. You work from home? Obviously you will want to network with others who work from home. You may have a business they would like to join (presumably you are all working from home with a primary view to make money from home?) or you may be looking for a work at home business idea, and someone on the network has just what you are looking for. OK, so none of you are interested in chatting about football or handbags - you can go to the more obvious social networking sites for that sort of thing - but by aiming to reach the market which most reflects your own business goals, you are most likely to present your business to those who want to work with you, or at least to find out more.

Are you a home business entrepreneur? Do you work from home, whether for an employer (ie your office is at your own home base), or you run your own business from home premises, or you maybe work for an employer but are also running your own business part-time from home? Then you might appreciate linking up with people in the same field of work. Whether for an online discussion, forum, blog whatever, or to market your own business and products. Try a home-workers', or home business opportunists', network. Take a look at what's new, as this may be your best chance to join early on and get established before the rush!
